Film Reflection 22

May 18 2009
This lesson, many people presented their powerpoint presentations, most people who presented had similar documentaries by Michael Moore, for example, Bowling for Columbine, Sicko, fahrenheit 9 11, etc. Many people didn't have powerpoint presentations, which I thought made their presentations really boring, though quite informative. I especially liked Lucas' presentation on Bowling for Columbine, even though it was way too long and too informative. I thought it was well organized and quite interesting, because he first introduced Michael Moore (background information). Though I thought the only bad thing was that he didn't have a proper introduction and a proper ending. He didn't talk about his thoughts and if he was persuaded by Michael Moore. Though overall, he explained how Michael Moore influenced people to side with his views by using techniques that could make the documentary more believable. For example, he explained the camera angles used and how it enhances the overall mood of the video, and the sounds, other tecniques (statistics),etc. His presentation was really informative, and it also helped me a lot with my presentation. There were a few notes that I missed out in my research, and I took it down and included them in my presentation, because I was also focusing on Bowling for Columbine. Through Lucas' presentation, I learnt that Michael Moore wanted to portray the violence and the high level of gun crime commited in America. Due to the fact that I didn't present today, it meant that I had more time to improve my presentation, and I followed the comments and feedbacks from Ms. Wong to improve it. My goal for next lesson is to edit my current powerpoint presentation, and change my speech a little (add information that I missed).

Film Reflection 21

May 7th 2009
This lesson, Ms. Wong didn't give us time to complete our videos but she introduced us to our new project, it was to create a powerpoint presentation on one of Michael Moore's documentaries. She showed us many examples of Michael Moore's work on Youtube and I found many very funny and some really sad, for example, an extract from bowling for columbine. It was a clip about how America was corrupt and violent, it also portrayed his views on America, even though he himself is an American. The main purpose of thie lesson was to look at examples of the work of Michael Moore's, and choose a documentary for next lesson and analyse it by creating a 3-5 minute powerpoint presentation on it. My goal for next lesson is to start working and researching about Michael Moore's documentary. I decided to focus on the extract from Bowling for Columbine because I loved how Michael Moore's uses many techniques to persuade his audience to side with his views.

Film Reflection 23

May 21 2009
This lesson, our class was introduced to our next project. We had to create a documentary that portrayed one of Hong Kong's major issues. My group, which consists of Issac, Shun, Clare, Francessca, and I decided to create documentary about how technology affects teenagers

Reflection 20

May 4 2009 - Intellectual Property

This lesson, we continued to watch the finalized videos. Everyone's videos was shown today, following Clare's and mine. I thought Clare's video was really well done, I especially liked the part of the flashing images following the red texts. Though the one bad thing about it was that there were too many images, and not much footage, so it made the video seem a little boring. Though overall, I thought it was really well made. After watching clare's video, students made comments and feedbacks, also ms. wong. Overall, the comments were all generally about how there were too many images and too little footage. There was also the problem with the font colors. The colors clare chose didn't have much contrast with the background, therefore it made it blend in with the background a little. This made it hard for the audience to read. Ms. Wong told her that if she wanted to improve, she had to change the color of the font, and even though she liked the idea of the flashing images, there were too many images, which made the film look unlively. After Clare's video, my video was shown next. I thought I did a good job, I thought that the setting of the scene and the footage (angles, acting) were all dont really well. I thought it looked really professional, though the only downside of it was the last scene, there were too much text which made the audience not want to read it. After watching my video, students and Ms. Wong made some comments and feedbacks 0n what they liked and how I could improve it. They thought that the setting of the scene was chosen well, and the video was overall quite successful, except for the last scene. There was too much text, which made it really boring. Also, during the film, there was only one person in the entire audience besides clare, this made it look unrealistic, though it was still acceptable because besides the first scene, the other scenes were all shot using close up angles. After watching everyone else's videos, Ms. Wong told us that we could finalize our videos, and improve the downsides that were just pointed out by classmates. I was really relieved because I thought I could have improved on my last scene, and made the video more succesfull. My goal for next lesson is to complete this video, and edit the parts that need improving. Overall, I thought this lesson was really fun because I was able to watch many of my classmates Intellectual Property videos. I also through the comments and feedbacks from my classmats and Ms. Wong, I learnt how to prevent mistakes and avoid them in future videos.

Reflection 19

April 30th 2009

Today, we started watching everyone's finalized videos. I took notes about the comments that students made after watching certain videos, and also some of the areas they could have improved. There were a certain videos that I liked and some I disliked. One of the videos that I particularly liked as Lucas'. I thought his video was very professionally done, and creative. The video had a very dramatic effect to it, allowing the audience to feel more captured into the video. It was very epic, just like the commercials that are played in every DVD that you buy from stores. Overall, I thought his video was well created, though the only thing I didn't like about it was the dialogue, his voice did not match the video at all, and sometimes the background music covered up his voice, which made it particularly hard to hear and comprehend to the audience. Another video that I liked was Joanna's. It was also very well thought of and professionally made. She used effects that increased the dramatic effect within the video, and the font style and background music increased it even more. Overall, I thought her video was well made, though it might have been too descriptive, and some of those scenes were too fast, which was hard for us to grasp. Another thing I liked about her video was that the starting and ending of each scene followed the offbeat of the background music. One of the videos I disliked was Marcus' video. The background sounds were very loud, which covered the dialogue. It was very noisy, and it showed that he didn't use the microphone well because it also captured the background noise. I thought he chose the worst setting because it was on the 3rd floor, during break time, where it was the loudest area in the entire school. He also chose the worst time to film there because during break time, the area tends to be very loud because people play basketball, run around, talk, etc. Though the video was humorous, and it made everyone laugh. Another video that I didn't like was Michelle's one. It seemed like too much was going on at once, and it ended up making the video very messy. The message was quite clear, though the images and text that popped up seemed like too much. Overall, I liked the effects that she added in, though it was too confusing, because I couldn't really focus on anything because too much was happening at the same time. At the end of the lesson, there was no time to watch my video so I didn't hear any feedback yet, though I am still looking forward to hearing the comments. This lesson, I was able to watch many videos concerning Intellectual Property, and was also able to see how creative other classmates were. The comments and feedback that were given to other classmates were useful because I am now able to prevent some of the mistakes that they made from their videos.

Reflection 18th 2009

April 27th 2009 - Intellectual Property

This lesson, I carried on working on my 30 second video. My goal for this lesson was to complete editing the dialogue and create the banner on paint, showing the consequences of illegal camcording, the awards given to anyone that detects it and also what the government is doing to prevent it from happening. Firstly, I finalized what the text that was going to be included in the banner and double checked if there were any mistakes. After that, I went to the 7th floor and opened up a new paint page and tried out many different background colors that matched the theme of entire video. I chose to include white, black and red in the banner because based on the setting of the video, which is the cinema, there were colors that consists of black and red. I chose to make the background white in order to create contrast with the black and red text. After including the title and all of the text, I thought it would be more interesting if there was a picture somewhere in the banner. I went on google and searched an image of illegal camcording taking place in a cinema. I copied the image and pasted it onto the paint page I was working. I saved the image to a JPEG file, and I was quite frustrated because it got really pixelated and some of the words were not as clear as before. I went back to the macromedia room and imported the banner into my video. I lengthened it a little in order to give some time for the audience to read the text. I rewatched the entire video and thought that the banner was too informative, though I decided not to change it because it would have taken more time and the video was due this lesson. All I needed to do now was add in chinese subtitles and my video would be complete. I went on Babel Fish translation to translate some of the text, though much of the translated text did not make any sense. Luckily, Gao Lao Shi was there, I asked him how to translate the english text and he helped me type out the chinese subtitles. At first, I thought typing the subtitles were a bit tricky, but I got the hang of it later and it eventually got easier. After that, all I needed to do to finish my video was to create my credits, I included Ms.Wong, Mr.Chiang, Clare Pemberton and the music I used and also the picture that was included in my banner at the end. I re-watched the entire video and rendered all parts that needed rendering and finally exported the video into a quicktime file. I thought this lesson was very useful beause I finally managed to finish my video completely, even though the ending might be a bit boring, I found the outcome quick well done. Next lesson, we are going to start watching the finalized videos, I am quite excited because I wanted to hear the feedbacks and comments from my classmates and Ms. Wong to see what I could do to improve my video, and what are the pros and cons of it as well.

Film Reflection 17

April 23rd 2009 - Intellectual Property

This lesson, Clare and I started to continue editing Clare's video, because her's was still half completed. We managed to insert many of the images we took in Times Square onto final cut pro and changed all of their speed to 15 milliseconds. Clare's intellectual property is "copying and selling fake goods illegally", her idea of the video was to capture images of famous brands, such as "dior", "chanel", "anna sui",etc, and also capture pictures of fake goods in lady's street, Causeway bay. Her goal was to adjust the speed of the images to match the beat of the music, so the pictures would flash quickly showing real and fake goods together. After adjusting the speed of all the images allowing it match the beat of the music, Clare decided that she would not include a dialogue because she thought it was better without it, and also due to the lack of time left, we couldn't record her dialogue. After editing Clare's video, we edited my project. I was very pleased with my work and I thought I was almost done editing already, I only needed to add a banner, but due to the fact that the background color could not be changed, I decided to make an image instead, and insert it in to the video. Due to the fact that the jail scene wasn't captured very well, Clare and I decided to re-take the scene again, because it would only take a second to do. We went down to the auditorium, where there were bars that looks like that ones in jail. We took about 10 minutes to adjust the camera stand, because the bars were near the stairs, we couldn't adjust the camera stand to be straight, which made the camera slanted. After 10 minutes we decided that I would hold the camera instead, because the tripod could not stand straight on the stairs. Because the background was the auditorium, we needed something as the background. Clare and I found wooden planks on the floor and decided that they should be the background. Because the planks were not long enough, we took two and placed it together at the back of the scene. I recorded the scene and I was pretty satisfied with it. We captured the clip onto the computer, and I edited it so that it would be in the correct place in the video. When I re-watched it, I was quite angry because I saw a gap between the two wooden planks at the background, which showed a bit of the auditorium. Because of this, I decided to adjust the color of the scene and make it darker because I wanted to make the gap at the back less obvious. After making the scene darker, I thought the jail clip looked a lot better, and it also suited the atmosphere of the scene; dark, gloomy. After that, I went online and downloaded a sound effect of the jail door closing, I thought this could add on to the dark jail effect. I imported the sound effect into the video and adjusted the placement of it until it matched the jail scene. Clare and I tried to add subtitles to both of our video, but we failed to figure out how to do so. My goal for next lesson is to create an image about illegal camcording that included text about it, I would also need to edit my dialogue. I also need to add subtitles for my video. Overall, my video is nearly done, and I am quite satisfied with the outcome. I thought this lesson was very useful because my video is nearly completed! :)

Film Reflection 17

April 20th 2009

This lesson, Clare and I worked very productively, and we managed to work fast and got a lot of things planned out and modified. After capturing the footage from last lesson and re-capturing the scenes that were accidentally deleted, Clare and I were finally able to start editing and sorting all the clips together. I managed to get everything in place and cut off some parts of the clips. After that we went to www.myvideocompetition.com and went through some of the music that was available for download. We listened to all of the tracks to find out with one suited our videos the best, and we each chose a few for consideration. After discussing and looking at our briefly edited videos, we both decided on one of the tracks. The track that I choice was called "take your time". I thought the track sounded very fun and childish, which suited my video, because instead of making a serious video on Illegal Camcording, I wanted it to be a more humorous. I downloaded "take your time" and imported it to my video. I realized that the track was more than 1 minute long, so I needed to decide on which part of it I needed to cut off. I decided to stick with the beginning of the song and cut off the rest of the it when it went up to 32 seconds. I included the extra 2 seconds in order to give a little space for my short credits after the video. After importing the track, I briefly shifted many of the clips around in order for them to match the rhythm of the song. I watched the entire video and realized that the front scene was too dark, even though the scene is suppose to be located in a cinema, which is obviously dark before the movie starts showing, I decided to add or modify the color or brightness of the scene in order for it to be brighter and easy to see. I used the effect "edit brightness and contrast" to the scene and adjusted it so that it would be easier to see, which worked out in the end. After watching the video, I also realized that the jail scene at the end was very badly taken, and I realized I needed to take it again because the camera was very unstable and shaky, due to the fact that there were no tripods left when we captured the clip. After that I watched the entire video again, at the end of the video I looked at the time and realized that the whole video was about 1 minute long when we were required to make a 30 second video. I panicked because I needed to cut about half of my entire video. Clare and I discussed about which clips needed to be shorten. We then cut many of the scenes that weren't that important, and fast forwarded them which turned out good. The video was now 23 seconds long, which meant that I sill had space to add in the jail scene (which needed to be retaken), and also space for the banner (which includes dialogue) and short credit at the end. My goal for next lesson will be to re-take the jail scene and include a banner in my video about the consequences and awards for Illegal Camcording. I would also needed to include subtitles and include a short credit at end. My general goal is to complete the video after next lesson, also making sure that it would succeed 30 seconds. Overall, I thought this lesson was useful, I was able to do a lot and my video developped very quickly.

Film Reflection 16

April 6th 2009 - Intellectual Property

This weekend, we captured most of the footage that we both needed in our 30 second videos. As we planned last lesson, the time and the location we were going to film, helped us save a lot of time and we simply got our equipment and went to Causeway bay to film everything. This lesson, since we were not completely done with our filming, we decided to ask Ms. Wong to book the auditorium so that I could film my video. We got all our equipment together and went straight to the auditorium to film. In my storyboard the location was the cinema, since we were not allowed to film in cinemas, we decided to film everything in the auditorium, because it looked the closest to a cinema. Once Clare and I arrived at the auditorium, we tested all the lighting in the control room in order to make the place brighter and darker (when the movie starts the lights so brighter from the dark). We finally found the controls to turn on the projector and also the lighting to make the front stage brighter (just like the projector in cinemas). Once we got everything fixed and ready (cameras stand). We practiced it once with Mr. Wong's assistance as a ordinary Hong Kong citizen who was simply watching a movie in the cinema. After a few tries and discussing improvements that include angles, distance, actions, lighting, etc, we finally got right and captured it. Overall, we recorded 3 times due to the distance changes and the camera angles changes. When we were done filming, we suddenly realized that we were using the same tape as the one that we used to film in Causeway Bay and realized we overlapped all the footage that we captured that day. Clare and I were both very frustrated, though since there was nothing we could do about it, we might as well went filming in Causeway Bay again. Forunately, not ALL of the footage we recorded in Causeway Bay was overlapped, many footage at the end was still there. Clare and I decided that we would go fimling today after school in order to re-take all the footage that we did recorded the other day. After that, we went back and captured everything we had so far, just in case we overlap it again. The capture was successful, and we managed to save everything. Overall, I think this lesson was great, everything was recorded and shot well, similar to what we had in mind, except for the fact that we needed to re-take all the footage that was overlapped. Our goal for next lesson is to re-take everything that is missing, and record everything else that needs to be shot. Though in general, despite the fact that Clare and I got really frustrated when we realized our previously taken footage was mostly gone, we still had an enjoyable lesson, it was really fun and we worked well at the same time.

Film Reflection 15

April 2nd 2009 - Intellectual Property 3

Today, Clare and I finished our storyboards and also discussed many interesting ideas that could make our videos more interesting. We gave each other advice that we thought would improve both our videos in general. Clare advised me to include some transitions when I am editing the footage, because many of my camera angles are either different or the distance is not the same. If i did not add transitions, they the video would look very messy overall. I thought Clare's advice was very useful and I would consider doing it, though it depends on the footage that I will record later. I also gave Clare some advice that she considered. Due to the fact that she considered to change her original topic for intellectual property from "selling fake handbags", after contemplation, she modified it to "selling fake watches". I adviced her to do fake handbags because we were more familiar with places that selled fake hand bags due to the fact that we often buy fake handbags, we knew many places that sold fake handbags, instead of fake watches. After dicussing improvements and modifications that we could do to each others video, we practiced what we were going to do in both of our videos. Since Clare was going to be the actor of my video, I showed her some of the actions that she was required to do in each scene. I told her many of the things she could improve to fit the video in my mind. Due to the fact that Clare was sure about her topic yet, I could not practice any of the actions I needed to do for her video. Afterwards, Clare and I worked on our scripts, we discussed the angles and the distances for each scene in more depth and we talked about the time, the location, who was in the film, etc. Overall, this lesson was very useful, Clare and I both got a lot of things done and our goal by next lesson is to finish capturing all the footage we would record. Since the video is due by the end of easter, we wanted to get things done quicker, we managed and planned the times we were going to go filming and where we would film, hence saving time later on.

Film Reflection 14

March 30th 2009 - Intellectual Property 2

This lesson, my partner and I carried on planning on our topics that best expressed to the theme of intellectual property. After consideration, I chose to do illegal camcording because I thought it would be very interesting and fun if I created a film about that just like the ones in the cinemas. Clare decided that she would do the manufacturing of pirated handbags, I thought this was also a fun and interesting topic to choose, because it occured in our daily lives, even we buy pirated handbags in Causeway bay. I did some research on illegal camcording and found that "Illegally camcorded movies cause significant harm to the economic success of movies,
the industries that distribute them and the jobs these industries create"(Sam Ho), and if anybody is caught breaking the law, they may be fined up to HK$50,000(US$6,410) and imprisoned for up to three months. "50,000 anti-camcording stickers to be fixed on the back of seats inside all cinemas in Hong Kong. These stickers highlight to cinema patrons that
camcording is a crime with severe penalties and promote the reward scheme of
HK$2,000 (US$256) for anyone reporting illegal camcording to cinema staff"(Ifact-GC, 2008). After researching this, I learnt a lot more about illegal camcording and the damage it causes to the economical success of movies by infringing copies and selling them to people or a cheaper price in public. Afterwards, I started planning the 30 second video clip that I will create from illegal camcording. I had a brief idea of what the video will look like in my head, and sketched it onto my storyboard. I also started writing my script for the video clip, it included the issue itself, how people are proventing it, the consequences and also the rewards. Overall, I thought this lesson was very helpful in terms of planning and structuring my ideas and organizing them into a brief video. I now have a clear idea of what my video is going to look like and what will be included for the dialogue. My goal for next lesson is to continue on my storyboard and finish the details of each clip; I will include the details of the shot, the distance, the angle of the camera, the action (what's being shot) and the dialogue. I plan to finalize my script next lesson and get ready to capture the footage by the end of this week, in order to edit the next week. After the last assignment, I realized that I was very bad at time managment, to prevent this from happening agian, I am going to plan out the dates in which I will film and edit in order to get things done more organized and in a shorter period of time.

Film Reflection 13

March 26 2009 - Intellectual Property 1

Today, I learnt more about the new assignment in more depth. For this assignment I did some research on Intellectual Property, and found out that "Intellectual property (IP) are legal property rights over creations of the mind, both artistic and commercial, and the corresponding fields of law."(wikipedia) My partner, Clare, and I discussed many of our ideas that we had on the theme of intellectual property. Clare had many great ideas that ranged from plagorism to selling pirated dvds. I had two ideas as well, one of them were plagorism and the other one was illegal camcording, I thought they were both very good ideas because it was something that happened in our daily lives. Clare and I went to www.mycideocompetition.com for more information about our task, we looked through the guidelines and it is clear that we must demonstrate our understanding of how sound and visuals can be used together to create meaning, in other words, we needed to address the use of sound design that was previously studied in our last assignment. Overall, I thought this lesson was very useful because my partner and I planned and discussed many of our individual ideas on how we could address intellectual property. My group for next lesson is to pick a topic that could express to the theme of intellectual property and start researching on that that so that I could create a script of what to say in the 30 minute video clip.

Film Reflection 12

March 23rd 2009

Today we finished off watching everybody's comic strips. I thought overall everyone did very well, though everyone had things that needed improving. Ms. Wong played our comic strip, and even though it wasn't that great, Clare and I were proud of what we had done because we spent a lot of effort finding background music, recording sounds, editing, etc. I thought that if we could have done this assignment again, we would have made the background music louder at some areas of comic and some softer. This was because when our comic was showing, some of the foley that we recorded were covered by the background music, and we were very disappointed because we spent most of the time recording the sounds. At some parts, the background music was too soft, because many sections of our comic did not have dialogue, therefore we did not add a lot of foley into it, this made it seem silent, and very boring. By having background music, we would have been able to improve our project a lot more interesting, it would have increased the tension within the comic and the audience. I thought we could have improved our dialogue, because as Ms. Wong said, there was not much emotion within our dialogue, and this decreased the tension within the comic and also made it quite boring. Since our group members were speaking in monotone, it affected our comic drastically. If there were no emotions, then there would have not been the dark atmosphere that the comic strip portrayed. Overall, I thought our group could have improved a lot, and after this whole task, I have learnt many new techniques on recording and creating foley, I also know what mistakes I made and could avoid them in future filming assignments. When our comic was over, Ms. Wong played our documentary. I was very disappointed with the outcome because it was very brief and all the information that we captured was not included. Clare and I were very confused as to how and why the footage that we captured throughout the process of create was not included. The documentary only showed a few examples of how we created foley, and many parts that we captured such as, filming the dialogue, the paper crumpling effects were all missing. Even though the outcome came out poorly, I know what could have been done to make it much better. If I had to do this project again, I would make sure that all our group members co-operate and work together well. Even though Kevin and Benny didn't do such a great job on the documentary, I learnt that this is an assignment that required group work, and we can't depend on one and other to complete things when we are doing another task. When the documentary was over, Ms. Wong gave us a brief description of what we were going to do next. She explained that we were going to make a 30 second video clip on intellectual property through creativity and innovation. She told us to plan and make some ideas of the topic, though I was unsure of the topic and I was determined to do some research at home. My goal by next lesson would have been to have an idea of intellectual property and think about how I can express my creativity and innovation to create a 30 second film on it.

Film Reflection 11

March 19 2009

Today, during class the first five minutes of class, my group and I rushed to finish off our comic strip. Since Benny and Kevin were in charge of the documentary and Clare and I were in charge of the comic, we split into two groups and worked as quickly as we could to finish. We were able to finish everything except for the background music, which Kevin was in charge of, but didn't send it to us. Clare and I were very frustrated, we exported the project and put it into the "drop box". Afterward, our class had the opportunity to watch all the other groups comic strip soundtracks and documentary. The first group was Issac Dunlop's group, and their comic was showed first. I was amazed by how well they created the foley, it looked as though they had lots of experience with this sort of work. I was especially surprised by their voices, and how well they matched the voices of the people in the comic strip. Francessca was the voice of the Princess in the coimic strip, her voice matched it really well and it made the tense atmosphere realistic. There was a lot of emotion in everyone's voice, even Tiffany, who played the voice of the baby was very realistic, and the editing made the voice seem even more real. Overall, I found their work very impressive, and since I haven't had any experience with Final Cut Pro, I felt as though I could have widely improved my comic soundtracks, and made everything more realistic. Afterwards, we watched their documentary, which showed the process of the making of the entire project. I fount it very interessting, and I also learnt many new ways of recording different types of foley. The second group was Andrew, Joanna, Justin, Joshua and Lucas' group. After watching the comic and the soundtrack they produced, I was more amazed. I felt terrified, and compared to them, I thought my work was horrible and was embarrased to show it. I loved the background music that they chose, it matched the scene of the comic as well as the atmosphere. The voices also matched very well with the characters in the comic strip, I especially liked Andrew's imitation of the bad guy's voice, it was terrific and very realistic; again, it was edited. Afterward, we watched their documentary, and we were able to see an insight of recording their voices, and their process of creating the comic. After that, we watched group 3's comic strip. I thought their one was not as realistic because there was no emotion in their voices, which lowered the gloomy atmosphere. I thought their trick of crumpling the pack of chips for rain was unsuccessful, because it was obvious that they were doing so while watching. Overall, it was decent and well done, the foley was nicely recorded, and the dialogue was placed in the right places. We watched their documentary afterwards, I thought it was very intersesting because again it showed the development of the entire process of create, and also whos voice was which character. Due to the lack of time, our group's video, which was supposingly next was not showed. I was very relieved because after watching some of the group's comics, I felt terrified because our's wasn't half as good. Overall, this lesson was very interessting, I saw the work of 3 groups, and I thought they all did a great job. I am looking forward to watching more projects next lesson, though a little nervous about ours.

Film Reflection 10

March 16 2009

Today, my group and I worked very hard on completing our comic strip sounds as well as putting them in the right places (editing). We split the group in two like last lesson so that it could improve our time management, getting more things done in a shorter period of time. We were informed that the "How to be a sound designer" project was due on Thursday. Clare and I were in charge of recording the sounds, as well as editing them. Benny and Kevin were in charge of recording the documentary and editing it as well. Clare and I discuss thoroughly about which sounds we needed improving, because even though some sounds were re-recorded, they still did not fit with the comic strip; the background noise was either too loud or the sound didn't match the comics. We prepared the equipment, since today we did not need to record the documentary anymore because we filmed all the footage needed already, Kevin didn't come with us to record sounds, instead he helped Benny edit the documentary on Final Cut Pro. Once we got all the equipment, Clare and I went straight down to the carpark and collected many pieces are large rocks and prepared to record the foley. This time, the sound sounded a lot more realistic than before, though there were still a little sound of air conditioners in the background. Afterwards, we went straight back up to edit all the footage, including the sounds recorded last lesson (including dialogue, narration). First, we captured everything, ranging from todays recordings and the ones from last lesson. Clare was researching on foley to find out if there were any ways to improve the "effect" of the atmosphere in the comic strip. We learnt that silence can be a powerful sound tool and that sound effects helped create dramatic meaning to the scenes. There were many foley and sound recording methods that we found, though because we needed to finish the project as soon as possible, we couldn't re-record the sounds for improvement. We edited and made many changes to the comic strip, many sounds were not placed in the right places, and the newly captured sounds were mostly placed in the right places. Though as we rewatched the whole thing to see what we got, I figured out that the volume of the foley did not match the image. For instance, a cart moving away. This sound should decrease gradually as the cart gets farther away, though we had trouble changing the volume, and we plan to do that next lesson. Overall, today was a very useful lesson, we worked very hard in order to get things done by thursday, and fortunately we are almost done, we only need to work on the volume, and we are missing a sound of birds wings flapping. We plan to get everything done during lunch breaks and recesses.

Film Reflection 9

March 10th 2009

Today, my group and I continued to work on our comic strips. We went in an empty music room so that there would not be any background sounds when we record a sound or dialogue. We prepared all of the equipment, two cameras in order to film the documentary, some of the soundtracks and also the dialogue. We used the music room and finished filming the remaining dialogue. For the dialogue, Kevin played the part of the "hero" in the comic strip. He had to make his voice sound serious and anxious in order to fit the role of the hero within the story. I was picked to be the voice of the young prince, I was only required to say one line, which was, "where am I...Where's my mother?" In this scene, I had to pretend I was a child in order to match the dialogue and the child's voice. Benny was the voice of one of the farmers, while clare played the part of the other farmer. While recording the dialogue, we took turns filming the documentary, where we would capture our group practicing the voices of our specific characters as well as the actual recording. After we finished that, clare re-recorded some of the narrator parts of the comic strip. This was because our group was not satisfied with some of the parts recorded last lesson, for instance, "The road of the village of Hapur". We needed her voice to be more dramatic, suiting the atmosphere of the comic strip. While we finished that, we decided to split our group in two to be less time consuming. Benny was going to film the documentary, while Clare, Kevin and I took turns being interviewed. While we were waiting, we had to edit our comic strip on Final Cut Pro, so we could improve some of the placements of the sounds. When it was my turn to get interviewed, Benny asked me questions such as: "What is the comic mainly about?", and also: "How did we capture some of the foley?". I answered saying that a middle aged hero was on a mission to save a young prince, and because I did not know much about the background of the story, since it is not included in our scene, I could not reply furthur. I also described how we captured many of the foley, for instance, in order to capture the sounds of horse galloping, I took two large rocks and thumped them against the ground with the horse galloping rhythn. At the end of this lesson, we were able to capture what we did today, which included the documentary, sounds, narration and dialogue; though we did not have the time to edit them yet. Our goal for next lesson is to start editing the footage we captured today, and put them in place on Final Cut Pro. I thought that our group worked productively this lesson. We were very focused in our work, and got things done fast and simple. We were very co-operative, and time managing, which helped with our overall team work.

Film Reflection 8

March 2 2009

Today, my group and I continued to edit our soundtracks into the comic strip, we were nearly done with the first recorded soundtracks. While we were editing, we found out that many soundtracks recorded either did not sound like what we were trying to improvise or the background was too loud and it covered up the sound we intended to record. For example, one of the examples are "horse galloping" sounds. The original sound we recorded was perfect, except for the fact that the background sounds were too loud, and we could only hear a partial part of it. Due to this, we decided to re-record the sound in order to make the background noises disappear. We prepared the equipment needed (microphone, camera, tripod, etc) and went to the climbing wall area. When we were there, we discussed what we were going to re-record, including the horse galloping sound, and marked down certain soundtracks that needed to be recorded again. Though firstly, we collected two large rocks and thumped them on the floor in a "horse galloping" rhythm. We practiced it a few times, and while we were doing so, Benny and Kevin set up another camera to film some of the documentary, and some of the process of sound recording. When we thought that the sound sounded realistic enough, we recorded it. After that, we also re-recorded the sound, "walking on soil". We did this on the 3rd floor, where there was a grass patch. While we were recording the sound, likewise, Benny and Kevin taped us recording for the documentary. Furthermore, our group went to one of the empty music rooms, and recorded narration parts, such as "The province of Eathaar near the river ganga". After that, we uploaded the documentary and soundtracks onto the computer and started to edit what we taped today. Overall, we were quite satisfied with what we ended up recording today. The "horse galloping" sound was very realistic, and fitted perfectly with one of the comic strip scenes with the horses racing off. We were also very pleased with the "walking on soil" sound, we thought it matched the comic strip very well as well. Our goal for next lesson is to start recording the dialogue for the comic strip and continue editing the soundtracks we recorded today. I thought this lesson was very useful, I improved and developped my confidence and skills in manipulating audio film eqquipment, as well as understanding the importance of sound recording on set. I thought that this lesson was very fun, most of all our group worked well and improved on our team work and time management.

Film Reflection 7

February 26 2009

This lesson, my group and I were continued to edit the soundtracks that we recorded during the previous lesson. So far, we got a few parts of the soundtracks placed in the correct place on the comic strips. Some of the soundtracks were not satisfactory, so we decided to edit some of them or re-recorded them. For example, there was a scene in the comic strip that had a picture of rocks falling off a cliff, my group and I wanted to create the sound of rocks falling of a cliff by collecting rocks and dropping them on a rocky floor. Though the outcome was not what we expected, and we were not very satisfied with it. The outcome did not sound like heavy rocks falling off a cliff, it sounded like glass being shattered onto the floor, and in the background, there were noises of buses and air conditioners. Therefore we decided to re-record that soundtrack and edit the other soundtracks slightly because those were content. Today we decided to split up in two groups, Benny and Kevin would continue to edit the soundtracks we recorded last lesson, and Clare and I worked on the documentary and record more soundtracks comic strip. We successfully recorded some of the documentary, describing what we had done so far and what we needed to redo or improve. We also recorded another sound which was meant to be wind. Clare and I used a thin piece of paper and went down to the car park to record the wind while the paper flapped. We wanted to make the sound realistic, and by adding that paper, we were able to record the sound of howling wind. Unfortunately, while we were doing the documentary, we accidentally overlapped the previous sound that we recorded. We were very frustrated, but decided to re-record it next lesson, hopefully the wind would sound as prominent as it did today. Overall, this lesson was very productive. My group and I were able to get many things done and developed the comic strip soundtracks. Our goal for next lesson would be to edit and improve the sounds that we have now therefore matching the comic strip more, making it more realistic.

Film Reflection 6

February 23rd 2009

This lesson, my group and I, which only consisted of only Benny, Clare and I, continued to work on the soundtracks of "Dark Before Dawn" comic strip. We carried on with our original soundtrack document that we worked on last lesson, and finalized scene 24 to scene 29. While Clare and I were editing the soundtrack document, Benny taped bits of us talking and discussing about how we were going to create different sorts of sounds which matched the scenes of the comic strip for the documentary of the "How to be a Sound Designer" assessment process. Afterward, we prepared the filming and sound recording equipment and then started to discuss the locations we were going to record the sounds, since we already wrote down how we were going to create them. My group and I used many places to record the sounds, such as the climbing wall area, where we would use the soil to create a large thumping sound for the bird landing. We also collected some pebbles and scattered them across the floor to create the sound of pebbles moving from the wind. Furthermore, we recorded more sounds such as wind blowing and stones falling on the floor to create the sound of large rocks falling off a cliff. Our goal is to complete the sound recording as soon as possible so that we could have more time to edit them to where they are suppose to be placed in the comic. Today I developed my knowledge on the importance of sound recording, I realized that without sound, the comic would just be plan and unrealistic. I also developed a basic knowledge of sound recording, how to use the mic, where to hold it while recording, etc. I also improved my skills on using audio film equipment, as well as improving my teamwork skills, where everybody participates and engages into the activity. By the end of the lesson, my group finished planning the soundtracks for the comic strip, as well as completing a few of the basic soundtracks. We were also able to capture the soundtracks we recorded onto the computer and edited a little section of them. Overall, I thought this lesson was very useful because I learnt many methods of creating a variety of sounds through objects that I always use or see. I thought this lesson was very fun and very helpful, and I am very looking forward to continue creating sounds for the comic strip.

Film Reflection 5

February 19 2009

This lesson, my group and I continued to work on the "How to be a Sound Designer" project, creating and exploiting soundtracks that would match with every detail of the comic strip. I learnt that the reason for creating the soundtrack was to increase our understanding on how sound effects, music and silence are used to create meaning overall. Our group members split parts, Benny and Kevin were temporarily in charge of the documentary while Clare and I worked mainly on planning the soundtracks for every scene of the comic strip. The most common used soundtrack for the overall comic strip was the sound of blowing wind, we decided to create the wind sound by using a piece of thin paper and letting it flap around wind outdoors. In some scenes, we decided to make the "wind" soundtrack softer and in some scene louder, depending on the overall theme of the scene. If the scene was dark, gloomy and frightening, we wanted to create the creepy feeling to the viewers, and also increase the tension in the atmosphere. We also used a lot of "walking" soundtrack, we decided to use a rock and scrap it through some pebbles on the floor to make it seem like someone was walking; this would make the scenes very realistic. We decided to work on the volume of the soundtracks as well, because we learnt that if something was far away, the sound it would make would be faint, and if we didn't adjust the volume for that, it would seems very unrealistic. For the dialogue, there were only a few people included in section 4 of the comic, the young prince, the hero and the two shepherd-looking men. Because there consisted of two boys and two girls in our group, we thought it would be unethical and unrealistic if girls did the voices of the characters, since they are all men. Though Benny and Kevin felt reluctant of taking the parts, therefore we needed to find someone's voice that could match the voices of all the characters, which we will be doing next lesson. At the end of the lesson, we were able to finish planning out all the soundtracks for our comic strip, we also planned out how we were going to create those sounds, which I found very helpful because it expanded our range of creativity. Overall, I found this lesson very useful because my group got a lot of this done, Benny and Kevin started a little bit of the documentary, which will continue you develop throughout this assignment. I thought this lesson was very entertaining, it tested our creativity of creating sounds, which I found very interesting.

Film Reflection 4

February 12 2009

Today, our class was given rubrics and a description of what our next assignment would be. I read the sheets, and learnt that the aim for this assignment would be to focus on using sounds to enrich our films and to boost our knowledge and appreciation of the usage of recording sounds. I learnt that during the process of this assignment, we will be understanding the importance of sound recording and also increasing our knowledge and skills on using audio film equipment. While looking the criterias, I realized that this assignment, "How to be a Sound Designer", was to develop our awareness on Health & Social Education, and to boost our understanding on local and global issues. While Ms. Wong was describing our tasks for this assignment, which consists of many activies which include observing a variety of things like dramatic frilm texts, comics (making audio for it), practicing our creativity and confidence, and many more. At the middle of the lesson, my group, which included of Clare, Benny, Kevin and I, started to analyze the comic called, "Dark Before Dawn", that was given to us. At first we were very confused, but we started to understand a little more when we started reading from the beginning of the book, beacuse our part was the 4th section of the book. Our group starting to plan the audio recordings that we could do for each scene of the comic, in many scenes, beause the atmosphere looks gloomy and melancholy, thats why we planned to make sounds that depict the mood and the theme, matching the comic. Some of the planned sounds were: crickets, wind blowing constantly and footsteps in the backgroud. At the end of the lesson, my group and I were able to finish planning half of the audio in the scenes. Overall, I thought this lesson was very useful because we would briefly know what we will be doing next.

Film Reflection 3

February 9th 2009

This lesson, my class and I learnt sound techniques that could be used in a movie or a clip. First of, we watched a video about many different sounds that could be used to improve the sound quality of a movie. For instance, the video showed a clip of a dinosaur eating leafs, because it sound much louder and clearer if the sound was retaken and edited, the man in the video poured salt in a little sac and started grasping it with his hands, creating a munching sound, similar to leaves. Another exampled showed in the video, was of a dinosaur running. I found this one really interesting because the retaken sound was actually a brick being bashed against the floor, and it sounded so similar. I also learnt that when a sound is being recorded, there has to be dynamics in the process as well, just like the dinosaur running, the volume of the sound retaken went softer as the dinosaur ran farther away, which is what made the video seem even more realistic. After watching the movie, my group, Nick, Clare, Joe and I tried to make the sounds ourselves. We were asked to record or create a variety of sounds, these consists of, water, work, time, emergency, danger, love, silence, joy, youth and destruction. For each different sound, we used different techniques and methods of recording them. The sound I found most fun recording was destruction, since it is very challenging, my group and I tried many ways of creating the sound; for instance, hitting on walls, stomping really hard on the floors, and many more. At the end of the class, I successfully learnt how to make and edit sounds so that the final product of a video would be better, because the sound of the video is very important, especially to the audience. I also learnt many methods of making a certain sound. I thought this class was very fun, and very useful. I will definitely use the techniques that I learnt today, especially for filming purposes in the future.

Film Reflection 2

February 5th 2009

Today, my group and I starting editing the clips we took last lesson. We started by cutting the excess clips, such as many of the clips we took of us walking up the stairs, because we couldn’t get it right until many trials later. The biggest part that we cut was the part of “A student walks up the stairs look up in surprise”, because the clip was either too dark, or we didn’t look surprised. In the end, my group and I decided that we should retake that part, because none of those clips were suitable. We retook about 5 clips and finally captured the perfect clip. Though when we captured the clips onto the computer and re-watched them, we realized that it was just a little too dark, so we used the movie-editing program to make it brighter. After cutting the clips and reorganizing them, we added titles before each part that include the effect and atmosphere of the section. By the end of the class, I learnt how to use many special filming techniques, and editing techniques as well, such as how to use the “blur” effect on the camera, how to modify the colors and many more. I thought theses techniques were very useful, especially for future filming. I thought this lesson was very helpful and very amusing because I love editing films, and our group had a huge laugh about it during the lesson, and it made this session very entertaining.

Film Reflection 1

February 2 2009

This lesson, I learnt many things about filming, such as many interesting film techniques, for instance changing the effect, and changing the mood of the film, and many more. My group and I, who consisted of Benny, Kevin, Clare and myself, were assigned to complete an exercise called the “Cinematography Scavenger Hunt”. We captured many clips of us doing different things, such as picking up a piece of paper, and walking up the stair, having an engaged conversation with your friends, and typing on a computer. While filming these clips, we changed the effect of the film, for instance a sharp and detailed effect. Another one was changed the atmosphere of the film, making it seem coarse and documentary-like. We also learnt that we could change the mood of the scene by changing the color, which I found very interesting. Overall, I found this lesson very useful, especially because I learnt many of the basic techniques of filming, I thought the activities were a great way to start of a new term.
